Length of shorts helps in kicking
The length of Muay Thai shorts is a little shorter than kickboxing shorts, and much shorter than MMA shorts. This shorter length facilitates full range of motion for the leg. For example, when you throw a Teep (front kick) in both varieties of Teep Trong (front kick where sole of foot is used to push) and Teep Top (front kick where ball of the foot is used to strike), you have to raise your knee up and then snap it forward. If the length of the shorts is way up the thigh, then the shorts do not restrict the thigh when the knee is raised up.

High side cut of shorts helps in kicking
The sides of the Muay Thai shorts feature a high cut, so that higher kicks are easily performed. For example, when you execute a Tae Khao (axe kick), you raise you knee up, straighten your leg while raising it high and then bring it down so that the heel of your foot strikes the head or the shoulder of the opponent. Secure fit at the waist of shorts helps in kicking
There are five to seven rows of elastic that are sewn to make an elasticated waistband. An internal drawstring is also placed within this elasticated waistband. The elasticated waistband provides a tight fit to ensure that the shorts will not move up or down during training, while the internal drawstring firmly secures the shorts to provide an adjustable and a perfect fit. With the shorts firmly in place, you can easily perform a Tae Klap Lang (wheel kick/ spinning back heel kick/ back roundhouse kick). You can also initiate a front kick but then redirect it into a roundhouse kick, to perform a Tae Chiang (question mark kick), without any worry of the shorts becoming loose or unsecured.
Fabric material of shorts helps in kicking

Focus mitt drills are used for training punches. The trainer holds the focus mitts or focus pads, while the student wears gloves. With the gloves, the student punches the focus mitt held by the trainer. The trainer receives punches on the focus mitt but can also use the arm holding the focus mitt as if throwing punches, which simulates sparring. The punches thrown with the focus mitt by the trainer are evaded by the student with slipping, rolling, weaving, or shuffling techniques.
