Description

If you train Karate or Taekwondo and need a jacket that holds up to regular use without costing a fortune, this is a straightforward option. This fabric of this 16oz canvas karate jacket is on the heavier end of what most practitioners wear day-to-day — it’s sturdy, it moves well, and it doesn’t look tired after a few months of washing.

Why 16oz Canvas?

Canvas fabric is tightly woven, which gives it a firmness that lighter poly-cotton or 8oz fabrics don’t have. When you’re grabbing a partner’s lapel during drills, or your instructor is demonstrating a throw, a heavier canvas jacket holds its shape rather than pulling out of place. It also resists pilling better than lighter weaves over time.

16oz sits in the middle of our canvas range — heavier than the 10oz or 12oz options, but not as stiff as a competition-weight jacket. Most students find this weight comfortable for regular dojo training without feeling restrictive.

That said, if you train in warm conditions or do a lot of cardio-heavy sessions, you may find 16oz runs warmer than lighter options. For tournament use, check your association’s uniform requirements — some specify particular weights or styles.

Construction

The jacket is cut in a European style, which tends to fit a bit more closely through the shoulders and arms compared to traditional Japanese-cut uniforms. If you’ve trained in a more boxy-cut gi before, you may notice the difference — most people find it comfortable, but if you’re between sizes, consider sizing up.

The fabric is not pre-shrunk. This is standard for canvas uniforms — the jacket is cut with a shrinkage allowance built in, so you buy your regular size and let natural washing do the rest. Don’t size up expecting to compensate for shrinkage; the allowance is already factored in.

What’s This Jacket Suitable For?

This jacket works well for:

  • Karate training — the canvas weight is appropriate for most club training environments
  • Taekwondo training — suitable for ITF-style dobok or general club use
  • Beginners and students who want a practical, affordable jacket without committing to a full uniform
  • Replacement jackets — if your pants are still good but the jacket has worn out

It’s not ideal for WTF/World Taekwondo competition, which requires specific V-neck uniform tops. If you’re competing at that level, check with your instructor or association first.

Sizing

This jacket is available in four sizes:

  • 3/160 — suited to approximately 160cm height
  • 4/170 — suited to approximately 170cm height
  • 5/180 — suited to approximately 180cm height
  • 6/190 — suited to approximately 190cm height

Refer to the size chart images on this page for body measurements. If you’re right on the border between sizes, the European cut generally means sizing up is the safer choice — you want enough room through the shoulders to move freely without the jacket pulling across the back.

Keep in mind this jacket is sold separately from pants. If you need matching pants, browse our jackets and pants category or contact us and we can help you find a compatible pair.

Care Instructions

Canvas uniforms need a bit more care than synthetic fabrics to keep their shape and colour:

  • Wash cold (30°C or below) to minimise further shrinkage after the initial wash
  • Air dry — tumble drying will cause additional shrinkage and can damage the weave
  • Wash after every training session if possible; canvas holds body odour more than lighter fabrics
  • Don’t use bleach — it weakens the fibres and yellows the white over time

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the belt included with this jacket?

No. The jacket is sold on its own — no belt is included. If you need a belt, you can browse our belts category separately. Most students buy the colour they’re currently graded at, or a white belt if they’re just starting out.

Do I need to buy pants separately?

Yes, this is a jacket only. Pants are sold separately. If you need matching canvas pants, contact us and we can point you to a compatible style. Buying jacket and pants separately also means you can replace just one piece when it wears out, which saves money over time.

Will it shrink much in the wash?

Some, yes — that’s normal for untreated canvas. The jacket is cut with a shrinkage allowance already factored in, so you should buy your regular size. Wash cold and air dry to control how much it shrinks after the first wash. Avoid hot water and tumble drying.

What’s the difference between this and the 10oz, 12oz, or 14oz canvas jackets?

The main difference is fabric weight and feel. Heavier canvas (16oz) is more structured and durable, holds its shape during grabs and drills, and tends to last longer under regular use. Lighter options (10oz–12oz) are cooler and less stiff, which some students prefer — especially in warm training environments. The 16oz is a good mid-range choice for most general training.

Is this suitable for WTF/World Taekwondo competition?

Not typically. World Taekwondo competition requires a specific V-neck dobok style that meets WT specifications. This canvas jacket has a traditional wrap-style collar more suited to Karate or ITF-style Taekwondo. If you’re competing, check the specific uniform requirements with your association or instructor first.

Which size should I choose — 3/160 or 5/180?

The numbers refer to approximate height in centimetres — 3/160 for around 160cm and 5/180 for around 180cm. Use the size chart on this page which gives body measurements as a guide. If you’re between sizes or broad across the shoulders, size up — you want room to move without the jacket pulling across the back. The European cut is closer-fitting than some traditional styles, so this is worth keeping in mind.
