Description
White canvas karate pants built for real training
If you’ve ever had your pants split mid-kick or felt restricted during a deep stance, you know how much the right gi pants matter. These 12oz white canvas karate gi pants are a solid mid-weight option — heavier than the lightweight 8oz or 10oz pants you might wear for sparring, but not as stiff as a 16oz canvas pair. That middle ground makes them a good everyday training pant for karate, taekwondo, and traditional jiu jitsu.
At $42.00, they’re priced for regular training use. You’re not going to worry about throwing them in the wash after a tough session.
Why 12oz canvas works for most training
Gi fabric weight changes how pants feel and move. Lighter fabrics (8–10oz) are flexible and cool but wear out faster and can feel flimsy. Heavier fabrics (16oz+) are extremely durable but can feel stiff and hot, especially in summer training.
At 12oz, these pants sit in a comfortable middle zone. The canvas weave holds its shape through hard training, resists the kind of wear you get from constant sliding and grabbing, and still allows a full range of motion for kicks, stances, and groundwork. They won’t feel like you’re fighting the fabric to get your leg up.
100% cotton means they breathe better than any poly-blend alternative. You’ll notice the difference in a long training session — cotton absorbs sweat and keeps air moving. The tradeoff is that cotton takes longer to dry, so hang them somewhere with good airflow after washing.
Construction details worth knowing
The elasticated waistband with an inner drawstring is the combination you want in a training pant. The elastic gives you flexibility as you move and ensures the pants stay put without constant adjustment. The drawstring lets you dial in the fit — useful if your waist falls between sizes or you prefer a snugger fit for competition.
The traditional cut gives you room in the seat and thighs for deep stances and high kicks without the pants riding up. If you’ve trained in slim-cut sports pants before, these will feel roomier — that’s intentional. Karate and taekwondo techniques require that range of motion.
What’s included (and what isn’t)
These are pants only — no jacket, no belt. If you’re putting together a full gi, you’ll need to purchase the jacket and belt separately. The pants work well paired with any standard black or white karate or taekwondo jacket.
They’re also a good standalone option if your current jacket is still in good condition but your pants have worn out — no need to replace the whole uniform.
What these pants are good for
These pants suit:
- Regular karate and taekwondo dojo training
- Traditional jiu jitsu training
- Home training and conditioning work
- Casual wear around the house if you like comfortable training-style pants
They’re not ideal for BJJ groundwork where constant mat friction would wear them down faster than a ripstop weave. For BJJ, you’d be better off with our ripstop jiu jitsu pants. And if you compete regularly and want the crispest appearance, the 16oz canvas pants hold their structure and look better over time.
Sizing guide
Sizes run 3/160 through to 7/200. The number pairing refers to the size category and the approximate height in centimetres the pants are designed for. A size 5/180 suits someone around 180cm tall.
A note on size 7/200: these are described as very large fitting. If you’re close to the 7/200 range, consider whether a 6/190 might actually be the better fit. When in doubt, check the size chart images on this page — they show both height and body measurements.
Weight of the pants is approximately 0.8kg. All sizes are the same price.
Care instructions
Wash cold to prevent shrinkage — 100% cotton can shrink in hot water, and canvas in particular can come out a size smaller if you’re not careful. Air dry rather than machine drying for the same reason. Once they’ve been through a wash or two they’ll settle and soften slightly, which most people find makes them more comfortable to train in.

Frequently asked questions
Are these pants just for karate, or can I use them for taekwondo too?
They work well for both. The traditional cut and canvas weight are standard across karate and taekwondo training. The main difference is that taekwondo uniforms typically use a V-neck jacket — but the pants are the same style. Many of our taekwondo students train in these exact pants.
Will the 12oz canvas shrink when I wash it?
Cotton canvas can shrink, especially in hot water or a hot dryer. Wash cold and air dry to keep the size stable. After the first wash, they’re generally settled and won’t shrink much further.
How do I choose between the 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, and 16oz canvas pants?
The lighter the weight, the more flexible and cooler-wearing the pant — but they wear out faster. Heavier canvas lasts longer and holds its shape better but can feel stiffer, especially when new. The 12oz is a solid mid-point. If you train hard several times a week and want durability without sacrificing comfort, 12oz is a good starting point. If you compete often and want the crispest look, consider the 14oz or 16oz.
Do these come with a jacket or belt?
No — these are pants only. The jacket and belt are sold separately. This is useful if you only need to replace your pants, or if you want to mix and match with a jacket you already have.
I’m between sizes on the chart. Should I size up or down?
For karate and taekwondo training, most people prefer a slightly relaxed fit to allow full range of motion. If you’re between sizes, sizing up is usually the better call. The inner drawstring helps you take in the waist if needed. One exception: size 7/200 is noted as very large fitting, so if you’re looking at that size, check whether a 6/190 might be closer to what you need.
Can I use these for BJJ training?
You can, but they’re not the best choice for regular BJJ training. Canvas weave wears down faster from constant mat friction and grappling than ripstop fabric does. If you’re training BJJ regularly, our 10oz ripstop jiu jitsu pants are a better fit for that purpose.
