Description

If you’re training with a partner, the quality of the focus mitts matters almost as much as the punches themselves. Good mitts give the holder real confidence, absorb the shock properly, and let the striker feel a satisfying, accurate hit. Cheap mitts sting the holder’s hand and deaden feedback for the striker. These leather curved focus mitts sit in the middle ground — solid leather construction, proper padding, and a curved face that rewards clean technique.

Why the curved shape matters

Flat focus pads are simpler to make, but they’re less forgiving. If a punch lands slightly off-centre on a flat pad, the striker’s wrist takes the deviation. A curved face guides the fist naturally toward the centre of impact, which matters when you’re drilling combinations at speed and technique inevitably drifts. For the holder, the curve also means your palm sits comfortably in a natural position rather than being forced flat — you can hold these for a longer round without your hand cramping.

This is why most coaches prefer curved mitts once they’ve used both. You can focus on calling combos and moving your feet rather than worrying about where the pad is angled.

Construction and materials

The outer shell is genuine leather, which is worth the price difference over synthetic options. Leather handles repeated impact better, doesn’t crack along strike lines the way vinyl does after a few months of hard use, and develops a slight give as it breaks in. These mitts will feel a little stiff out of the packaging — that’s normal. After a few sessions they soften to the right balance of firmness and flex.

The padding is high-density foam, thick enough to absorb sharp punching combinations without the force transferring painfully to the holder’s hand. The weight is 0.90 kg for the pair, which is light enough for extended rounds without arm fatigue being a limiting factor for the holder.

Fit and holding comfort

The back of each mitt has an open glove section and a velcro wrist strap. You slip your hand in and secure the strap — it takes a few seconds to put on or take off, which is practical between rounds or when swapping partners. The fit is designed for adult hands. If you have particularly small hands, they’ll feel slightly loose; the strap compensates for most of this, but it’s worth knowing.

The holder’s grip position is natural — your fingers curl lightly inside the glove section and your palm supports the back of the pad. This keeps your wrist stable through straight punches and hooks.

What these are good for

These mitts suit boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and general martial arts striking work. The curved face handles straight punches (jabs, crosses) and hooks well. You can also angle them for uppercuts. They’re not designed for catching kicks — if you need to catch round kicks or front kicks regularly, you want a kicking shield or Thai pads instead. These are a punch-focused training tool.

Good applications include:

  • Combination drilling (1-2, 1-2-3, hooks and crosses)
  • Reflex and speed work with fast hand movement from the holder
  • Beginner technique sessions — the curved face gives clear feedback on punch alignment
  • Fitness-based pad rounds where the holder calls combos and moves

Who holds, who strikes

It’s worth thinking about both roles. For the striker, clean leather mitts give good tactile feedback — you know when you’ve hit the centre versus the edge. For the holder, the padded back section and wrist strap protect against poorly-timed strikes, and the curved face means less wrist stress when holding at angles. Coaches and training partners both find these comfortable for a full session.

Care and maintenance

Wipe the leather down with a damp cloth after training — sweat left on leather dries it out and shortens its life. Once a month, a small amount of leather conditioner keeps the outer shell supple. If the inside gets odorous, a light sprinkle of baking soda left overnight absorbs most of it. Let them air dry away from direct heat; leaving them near a heater or in a hot car will crack the leather faster than normal use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these suitable for catching kicks as well as punches?

Not really. These are designed for punching combinations. If a light round kick clips the edge, they’ll manage, but for regular kick-catching you’d want Thai pads or a kick shield. Using focus mitts to catch hard kicks risks injury for the holder and won’t give the mitt a long life.

What’s the difference between these and the curved focus mitts also listed on the site?

The key difference is the outer material. These are genuine leather; the other curved mitt option uses a synthetic cover. Leather lasts longer under regular heavy use, feels better in the hand, and holds its shape through more sessions. If you’re training seriously several times per week, leather is worth the small price difference.

Do these fit smaller adult hands?

The fit is designed for average adult hands. If your hands are on the smaller side, the velcro wrist strap does a good job of tightening things up. Very small hands may find them slightly loose inside, but the strap keeps the mitt in position during use. These aren’t suited to children’s hands — junior size focus mitts would be a better fit.

How long should a pair of leather focus mitts last?

With basic care — wiping down after use, letting them air dry, and occasional conditioning — a pair of leather mitts used in regular club training should last two to three years or more. The strike surface wears more slowly on leather than synthetic. What usually gives first is the velcro on the strap, which can be replaced with sewing if it eventually loses grip.

Can I use these for solo shadow boxing or bag work?

These are designed for partner training — one person holds, one person strikes. They’re not suited to bag work. For solo training, boxing gloves or bag mitts are the right tool. You could put them on your hands and shadow box for light movement practice, but they’re not designed for that use.
