Description

Canvas gis are built to last. At 14oz, this one sits in the sweet spot for serious training — heavier and tougher than a beginner’s lightweight gi, but not as stiff as the 16oz canvas you’d reach for if you were competing at a high level. If you’re a committed student, an instructor, or someone who just wants a gi that won’t fall apart after a year of regular sessions, this is the weight to consider.

Why 14oz Canvas?

The weight number tells you how heavy one square yard of fabric is. At 14oz, you’re working with a dense, tightly-woven canvas that does a few things a lighter gi simply can’t.

First, durability. Heavy canvas resists the kind of wear that destroys lighter gis — fraying collars, thinning knee panels, seams that split mid-class. This is a fabric that gets better with use, softening gradually as the cotton fibres break in without losing its structural integrity.

Second, sound. Canvas produces an audible snap when you execute a sharp technique. If you train in karate or taekwondo, you already know this matters — that crack tells you (and your instructor) that your technique has real crispness behind it. Lighter gis muffle it.

Third, it stays put. A heavier fabric doesn’t shift and bunch the way a lightweight poly-cotton does. Once you’ve tied up and started moving, the gi holds its shape through the session.

Construction and Materials

This gi is made from 100% cotton canvas — no synthetic blends. Cotton breathes, absorbs sweat, and washes well over hundreds of cycles. Canvas is essentially a very dense weave of cotton, which is what gives it the weight and rigidity that makes it distinct from standard cotton gis.

The jacket is cut in the European style: generous through the shoulders and chest to allow a full range of arm movement, with longer sleeves. If you’ve ever worn a gi that restricted your punching or made it hard to reach up for a block, you understand why the cut matters. A tight upper back is a real problem in training.

Multiple lines of stitching run through the collar, sleeves, and all stress points. The collar and sleeve cuffs take constant punishment — grabbing, gripping, pulling — and that reinforced stitching is what keeps them intact over time.

The pants have a full gusset, which is the triangular panel sewn into the crotch area that allows your legs to move freely in all directions. Without a gusset, high kicks and deep stances pull at the seams. With one, you can kick freely without worrying about splitting the pants at an inconvenient moment.

The waistband is elasticated with an internal drawstring, which means you can fine-tune the fit around your waist regardless of the size you’re wearing.

Who This Gi Is For

This gi suits intermediate to advanced students who train regularly. It’s a good choice for:

  • Karate students and instructors who want a durable daily trainer
  • Taekwondo practitioners after a heavier, more substantial uniform
  • Jiu-jitsu students who need a tough training gi, (not suitable for grappling)
  • Anyone who has burned through lighter gis and wants something that actually lasts

It’s not ideal for: complete beginners who are still deciding whether to stick with the sport (a lighter 8oz or 10oz gi is a more practical starting point), or anyone training in a hot dojo with no air conditioning where the extra weight will become uncomfortable quickly.

Sizing This Gi — Read This First

This gi is not pre-shrunk. That sounds like a problem, but it isn’t — here’s why. The manufacturer has built a shrinkage allowance into the sizing. When you first wash it, the canvas will shrink a predictable amount, and the final size will match the size you ordered. Buy your regular size.

Before you wash it, the gi will feel about one size large. That’s normal and expected. Once you wash and dry it, it will settle into the correct fit.

The size code works like this: the second number is your height in centimetres. Size 3/160 is for approximately 160cm, 4/170 for approximately 170cm, and so on up to 7/200 for approximately 200cm. If you’re between sizes, go up — heavy canvas has less stretch than lighter fabrics, and a slightly larger gi is much more comfortable to train in than one that’s too snug.

Available sizes: 3/160, 4/170, 5/180, 6/190, 7/200.

Care Instructions

Heavy canvas is straightforward to care for, but a few habits will keep this gi in good shape for years:

  • Wash in cold water — hot water accelerates shrinkage and can affect the canvas weave over time
  • Air dry where possible — high heat tumble drying will gradually degrade the fabric
  • Wash after every training session — cotton absorbs sweat and odour builds up in canvas more than in synthetic fabrics
  • Don’t leave it in a bag while wet — heavy canvas takes longer to dry and is more prone to odour if left damp

Canvas does soften with wear and washing, which is a good thing — the gi becomes more comfortable over time without losing its structural strength.

What’s Not Included

Belt is sold separately. This gi comes as a complete jacket and pants set only. If you need a belt, we sell them separately in all colours and sizes — the size of your gi corresponds to the size of your belt.

Frequently Asked Questions

The gi says “not pre-shrunk” — will it shrink significantly after I wash it?

It will shrink, but that’s accounted for in the sizing. The manufacturer builds a shrinkage allowance into each size, so after washing, the gi should settle into the size you ordered. Before washing, expect it to feel about one size large — that’s normal. Wash in cold water and air dry to minimise any shrinkage beyond the expected amount. Do not buy a size up to compensate — just order your regular size.

Is this gi suitable for competition?

For Karate training and most club-level gradings, yes. The white canvas and clean construction meet the requirements of most organisations. If you’re competing at a specific tournament, check the event’s uniform regulations, as some have requirements around weight or specific approved brands. For BJJ competition specifically, check whether the gi meets IBJJF standards before competing in it.

How does this compare to the 12oz and 16oz canvas gis?

The 12oz is lighter and more flexible, making it a better choice for warm training environments or longer sessions. The 16oz is stiffer and more structured, preferred by some competitors and kata specialists for the sharper technique sound it produces. The 14oz sits between them — more substantial than the 12oz, but less rigid than the 16oz. It’s a good daily trainer for someone who wants durability without the full weight of the 16oz.

Does the belt come with it?

No. This gi includes the jacket and pants only. Belts are sold separately in all colours and sizes. The size of your belt corresponds to the size of your gi — so if you order a size 4/170 gi, you’ll need a size 4/170 belt. Contact us when you place your order if you’d like to add a belt at the same time.

How do I choose the right size?

The second number in the size code is your height in centimetres — 160, 170, 180, 190, or 200. Choose the size that matches your height. If you’re between sizes, go up rather than down. Heavy canvas has less stretch than lighter fabrics, so a slightly larger gi is considerably more comfortable to train in than one that’s too tight. Remember: before the first wash, the gi will feel about one size large — this is normal and expected for an un-pre-shrunk gi.
