Description

If you train Muay Thai, kickboxing, or MMA, your shorts matter more than you might think. The wrong pair restricts your kicks, bunches up when you clinch, and generally gets in your way. These black polyester satin Thai training shorts are cut the way Thai shorts should be — wide leg, high cut, and with enough room to throw a head kick without thinking twice about it.

Why Thai shorts are different from other training shorts

Traditional Thai-style shorts are cut much shorter and wider than board shorts or MMA-style shorts. That’s not just a style choice — it’s functional. The high-cut leg and wide split allow your hip flexors to open fully when you kick. If you’ve ever trained in longer shorts and then switched to proper Thai shorts, you’ll notice the difference immediately.

These shorts have wide side splits reinforced at the seam so they don’t blow out during hard training. The leg opening is generous enough for chambered kicks, teeps, and knees without the fabric pulling against your thigh.

Materials and construction

Made from 100% polyester satin — the same fabric you’ll see on Thai shorts from Thailand. Polyester satin has a smooth, slightly shiny finish that looks great but, more importantly, it’s lightweight and doesn’t hold sweat like cotton. After a hard pad session, you want fabric that stays light rather than becoming waterlogged.

The waistband is 10cm wide elastic with an inner drawstring. The wide elastic distributes pressure evenly so it doesn’t dig in when you’re twisting or clinching, and the drawstring means you can dial in the fit so the shorts stay put during explosive movement. No adjusting mid-round.

The white trim runs along each side, with red Thai lettering across the front. It’s a clean, classic look — black with white and red is one of the most traditional colour combinations in Muay Thai.

What these shorts are good for

These are solid all-round training shorts for Muay Thai, kickboxing, and MMA stand-up work. They’re also perfectly fine for the gym, running, or crossfit — the lightweight satin fabric and free-moving cut work well for any high-intensity training.

If you compete, check your gym or competition rules — some competitions require specific shorts. For regular pad work, bag work, and sparring, these are completely appropriate.

What these shorts are NOT for

These are not grappling shorts. The satin fabric and open leg cut aren’t designed for ground work — if you’re rolling in BJJ or wrestling, you want something with a tighter fit and more durable fabric. For MMA training that includes significant ground work, look at board-style MMA shorts instead.

Sizing guide

Thai shorts sizing runs differently from regular clothing. The waistband is elastic with a drawstring, so there’s flexibility, but getting the right size matters for how the shorts sit and move. Use the size chart below — measure your waist and compare to the chart rather than going by your usual clothing size.

Sizes available: S, M, L, XL. The price is the same across all sizes.

Care instructions

Machine wash on a gentle cycle with cold water, or hand wash. Hang to air dry — avoid tumble drying as heat can affect the satin finish and elastic waistband over time. These are easy-care shorts that will hold up well with basic washing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Thai shorts and MMA shorts?

Thai shorts are shorter and cut wider at the leg with deep side splits, which allows more hip mobility for kicking. MMA shorts are longer (mid-thigh to knee) with a tighter fit designed to work for both striking and grappling. If your training is primarily striking-based (Muay Thai, kickboxing), Thai shorts are the better choice. If you do a mix of striking and ground work, MMA shorts might suit you better.

Do Thai shorts have a size range that fits larger waists?

The elastic waistband and inner drawstring give these shorts a reasonable amount of flex. The XL covers larger waists, but we recommend checking the size chart carefully and measuring your waist before ordering. The drawstring lets you tighten or loosen the fit within a range, but it’s not a substitute for getting the right size.

Can I use these shorts for BJJ or wrestling?

Not ideally. The satin fabric and open-leg cut are designed for stand-up striking, not ground work. For BJJ or wrestling, you’d want board-style MMA shorts or vale tudo shorts that stay in place during rolling. These are a striking training short.

Will the satin fabric tear easily?

Polyester satin is more durable than it looks. The smooth finish doesn’t snag as easily as woven or mesh fabrics. The side splits are reinforced at the seams, which is the main stress point on Thai shorts. With normal care — machine wash cold, air dry — these should hold up well through regular training.

Do the shorts run true to size?

Thai shorts can run differently from regular clothing sizes, so don’t assume your usual size will be right. Use the size chart on this page and measure your actual waist. The elastic waistband gives some flexibility, but if you’re between sizes, most people go up a size for comfort when training.
