Description

Why long sleeves matter on the mat

If you’ve ever finished a rolling session with mat burn up your forearms, you already know the answer. A long sleeve rash guard covers the skin that a short sleeve leaves exposed — elbows, forearms, wrists — the spots that drag across canvas or tatami the most. Beyond mat burn, long sleeves add a layer of warmth for early-morning training or cool gyms, and they help keep muscles a little looser during warm-up.

This rash guard is built for the people who train across more than one discipline. Whether you’re rolling in BJJ, drilling MMA, hitting a surf session or just keeping warm at CrossFit, it does the job without getting in the way.

Construction and materials

The fabric is an 80% polyester / 20% spandex blend. That ratio gives you two things that matter in training gear: polyester pulls moisture away from your skin so sweat doesn’t sit on you, and spandex stretches in every direction so the guard moves with you rather than against you.

The compression level is moderate — enough to support the muscles without feeling restrictive. If you’ve worn very tight competition compression before, this sits a notch below that, which many people prefer for long training sessions.

Anti-microbial treatment is built into the fabric, not a surface coating. That matters because surface treatments wash out. The anti-microbial properties here are designed to last the life of the garment, slowing bacterial growth and reducing that post-training smell.

The design is sublimated, meaning the pattern is dyed into the fibres rather than printed on top. You won’t get cracking or peeling after a few months of hard use. Flatlock seams run flat against the skin with no raised edges — important anywhere the fabric sits against a joint or gets pressure from a grip.

What it’s suitable for

This is a genuinely multi-purpose piece of training kit. It works well for:

  • BJJ and grappling — full arm coverage protects against mat burn and reduces skin-on-skin friction during clinches and ground work
  • MMA training — worn under shorts alone or paired with compression shorts, depending on your gym’s rules
  • Muay Thai and Kickboxing — keeps arms warm during drilling and pad work, particularly useful in cooler gyms
  • Surfing and water sports — polyester dries fast and the UPF protection from the fabric helps in the water
  • CrossFit and gym training — moisture-wicking keeps you comfortable through metabolic conditioning work
  • Running and cycling — works as a base layer in cooler weather

Be honest: if you’re competing in a gi BJJ tournament with strict rules about what you can wear under your gi, check the ruleset first. Most allow rash guards, but sleeve length rules vary by federation.

Fit and sizing

This guard comes in Medium and Large. Check the size chart image on this page — it gives chest, waist, and hip measurements in centimetres for both sizes. Rash guards are meant to fit snug, so if you’re right on the border between sizes, go up. A guard that’s too tight across the shoulders will restrict your reach over time and become uncomfortable during extended rolling.

The guard is cut for a standard male torso shape but works fine for women who prefer a longer, less cropped fit. If you want something designed specifically for female body proportions, our women’s compression top is worth a look.

Care and maintenance

Machine wash cold, hang to dry. Don’t put it in the dryer — repeated heat cycles break down spandex faster than anything else and you’ll lose the compression fit. Don’t bleach it. If you train multiple sessions a week, rinse it in cold water after each session even if you don’t do a full wash — salt and sweat left to dry in the fabric accelerates wear.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear this under a gi?

Yes. Long sleeve rash guards under a gi are standard practice in BJJ, especially in cooler months. The moderate compression won’t bulk up under your jacket, and it reduces the friction burn you’d otherwise get from the gi collar and sleeves during extended rolling. Check your competition federation’s rules on sleeve colour if you’re competing — some have restrictions.

Is this suitable for women?

It fits, but it’s cut for a standard male torso. Women who prefer a fitted look at the hips may find it sits loose. If you want proportioning designed for women, have a look at our women’s compression top instead. That said, plenty of women train in unisex rash guards and find them perfectly fine, especially those who prefer a less form-fitting style.

How does the sizing run — true to size, small, or large?

Rash guards run snug by design — that’s how compression works. Check the size chart measurements (chest, waist, hips in cm) against your own measurements rather than guessing by your usual clothing size. If you’re between sizes, go up. A too-tight guard across the shoulders will restrict your movement during guard passes and submissions.

Will the anti-microbial treatment wash out over time?

No — it’s built into the fabric fibres rather than applied as a surface coating. Surface-treated anti-microbial finishes do wash out. The treatment in this guard is embedded during manufacturing and is designed to remain effective through normal washing. Cold wash, hang dry, and it’ll hold up well.

Can I wear this for surfing or water sports?

Yes — polyester dries fast and handles salt water fine. It’s not a dedicated surf rash vest with UPF 50+ rating printed on it, but the polyester-spandex blend does provide some UV protection and it’ll protect you from board rash. For serious open-water or long surf sessions in strong sun, you might want a dedicated surf guard with a specific UPF rating. For casual beach use or surf training, this works well.

What’s the difference between this and the short sleeve version?

Coverage and warmth, mainly. The long sleeve covers elbows and forearms — the spots most exposed to mat burn in ground fighting. If you train primarily in warm gyms or prefer less coverage, the short sleeve version gives you the same fabric and compression with more airflow. Many grapplers keep both: long sleeve for winter and cooler gyms, short sleeve for summer or cardio-heavy sessions.
