Choosing a good paddle

The paddle must be made in such a manner that it can withstand thousands of kicks. Pacific Sports paddles are made to stringent benchmarks and pass several quality checks. They are extremely durable and last a very long time.

Holder position

The paddles have to be held by a training partner. Pacific Sports paddles feature a strong handle which can be comfortably gripped. The firm padding of the paddles absorbs the force of the strike and the holder will feel only a slight force. Holding the paddle with a firm grip increases the shock absorption capacity of the paddle. However, you can kick with your full force, and therefore, a loop at the end of the handle is also provided so that the holder’s hand can easily slip through it, which prevents the paddle flying out of the hand, in case it receives a very powerful kick. The holder can hold two paddles with one each in left and right hands, due to which you can practice kicks with both legs, at different heights and angles. Getting feedback from the holder is important as it will enable you to better understand the accuracy and the force of your kicks, which will lead to further improvement in your kicking ability.

Warm-up

Before undertaking any kind of exercise, you need to warm-up your body. You may try light jogging or jump rope for about five to ten minutes. This may be followed by stretching exercises that stretch the entire body. Dynamic stretches may also be done to loosen up the muscles of the leg and hips. Stretching helps to improve flexibility, due to which higher kicks can be performed. You may also practice some shadow kicking by kicking in the air, so that the muscles are adequately warmed up. Sufficient warm-up also reduces the risk of any injury while training.

Basic kicks

Start with simple basic kicks like a front kick, side kick, and a roundhouse kick. Aim to kick the centre of the paddle with the ball, blade or the heel of your foot. Focus on correct technique by rotating your hips, or pivoting on the standing leg, while always maintaining balance. Slowly practice these kicks at different heights of low, mid, and high.

Intermediate kicks

Once the basic kicks are practiced, progress to more complex kicking exercises like combination kicks, consecutive kicks, and power kicks. You may combine kicks in a sequence like a front kick followed by a roundhouse kick. With Pacific Sports paddle practice, the control and fluidity of your kicks will improve dramatically. Thereafter, you may practice kicking the paddle in succession in consecutive kicks. Kick the paddle successively with a single type of kick or combination kicks. Kicking in succession improves speed, coordination and reaction time. Once, accuracy and speed are achieved, then focus on power by delivering powerful and strong kicks. Power comes from speed, mass, and technique. Correct technique will help to eliminate injury and also build strength.

Advanced kicks

After the intermediate kicks, you may incorporate jumping, turning, explosiveness, blocking and countering in your kicks. You may practice front and roundhouse kicks while jumping or turning. Performing consecutive or combination kicks while flying in the air can improve agility and explosiveness. Spinning tornado and back kicks helps in maintaining accuracy, balance and control. Blocking can also be done by the leg. By moving the leg sideways to left or right, blocks can be executed for low to mid height opponent kicks. For example, a low height front kick can be successfully blocked by moving the leg sideways and then that same leg can be stretched to execute a powerful side kick. Blocking and attacking with kicks require a high-level of control of the leg muscles and Pacific Sports paddles offer a fabulous way to practice them.

Conditioning

While training, short breaks as brief intervals improve endurance and recharges the body to continue high intensity kicking practice. Plyometric exercises like lunge jumps and jump squats help to condition the leg muscles, while improving strength, power, and explosiveness. Standing on one leg while delivering kicks with the other leg, conditions the core and the leg muscles, while improving stability, balance and control.

Cool-down

All exercise routines must start with warm-up and end with a cool-down. Static stretching by holding each stretch for few seconds or minutes can relax the tired muscles. Diaphragmatic breathing can relax and calm the mind, while flushing out the toxins from the body. Conversing with peers in an environment of camaraderie helps in cooling down happily.

Few tips

Always listen to your body. Never overtrain or exceed your limits abruptly. It is true that progress is made by pushing your limits, but the pushing is in small steps and by listening to your body, so that injuries like spraining, straining, or tearing of tissues or muscles are avoided. Focus on technique first and then go for speed and power. Regular practice is important to see any kind of improvement, hence avoid missing training sessions, as far as possible.
