Blister

A blister is a small pocket of body fluid within the upper layers of the skin. Practicing barefoot can result in forceful friction with the floor, which may cause blisters. If the blister gets infected, then it may be filled with pus. Taekwondo shoes help you to prevent blisters being formed on the sole of your foot, as there is no direct contact of the foot with the floor.

Callus

A callus is an area of thickened and sometimes hardened skin that forms as a response to repeated friction, pressure, or other irritation. Taekwondo involves pivoting on the balls of the foot, due to which the skin on that area gets hardened and forms a callus. A callus is generally not harmful; however, excessive formation may sometimes lead to other problems, such as a skin ulceration or infection. Taekwondo shoes can prevent calluses being formed, and since the sole of the shoe has pivot points, it helps in pivoting without the skin being rubbed.

However, any ill-fitting shoes can also cause blisters and calluses, therefore you must ensure that the shoes fit you well. If necessary, then the shoes should be first broken in by wearing them casually for a few days, before wearing them for your Taekwondo practice. Check out the shoe size chart so that you buy well-fitting shoes.

Contusion/bruise

A contusion, also known as a bruise, is a type of hematoma of tissue, the most common cause being capillaries damaged by trauma, causing localized bleeding that extravasates into the surrounding interstitial tissues. Most bruises occur close enough to the epidermis such that the bleeding causes a visible discoloration. The bruise then remains visible until the blood is either absorbed by tissues or cleared by immune system action.

A shoe provides a layer of protection on your foot. Impact from kicking during training or sparring is greatly minimized by the shoe and your foot does not suffer any bruise or contusion.

Abrasion/cut

An abrasion/cut is a partial thickness wound caused by damage to the skin. Abrasions usually involve minimal bleeding. Abrasion injuries most commonly occur when exposed skin comes into moving contact with a rough surface, causing a grinding or rubbing away of the upper layers of the skin. While practicing barefoot on rough mat or outdoors, the foot may experience an abrasion. The abrasion should be cleaned, and medical attention should be sought for further treatment.

Taekwondo shoes help you to prevent abrasions when practicing outdoors. It also helps indoors, as it prevents the skin of the foot from being forcefully rubbed on the floor, while you are practicing various types of falls or throws.

Toe injuries

Accidental stepping on or stubbing of the toes can occur and this may result in your toe getting injured. Taekwondo shoes help to protect your feet from such accidents.

Stress factures

The shoes provide cushioning of the foot so that the stress felt by the bones of the foot, due to impact with the floor is absorbed and minimized. When you are practicing barefoot then stances, kicking, sparring, and other movements may cause the bones of the foot to experience a high level of stress, which may result in a stress fracture. Taekwondo shoes absorb impact and help in reduction of the stress; thereby, they minimize the chances of a fracture in the bones of the foot due to stress.

Ankle sprains

An accidental incorrect placement of the foot while practicing stances, kicks, landings, or throws, may result in the ankle being sprained. An ankle sprain can take away days or weeks of practice. A Taekwondo shoe provides firm support to the ankle due to which it helps in preventing or minimizing such accidental ankle sprains. The Taekwondo shoe supports your ankle and reduces the likelihood of your foot experiencing awkward twists or landings.

Taekwondo shoes certainly help to prevent or minimize foot injuries, nonetheless, adequate warm-up, stretching, breathing, plyometric exercises, cardio exercises, conditioning exercises, and cool-down, also play an important role in preventing or minimizing injuries.

Normally, incorrect technique leads to an injury and therefore focus should be on getting the technique correct. Once the technique is correct, then by wearing Taekwondo shoes, several other types of foot injuries as mentioned above can also be prevented.

Along with Taekwondo shoes, you may also try out Pacific Sports shin-ankle-instep guards for practicing various types of kicks in an extremely safe manner.
