Improve your kicks with kicking shields

Every kick has a specific technique. It is recommended to master the technique first and then aim for accuracy, speed and power.

Front Kick

Your training partner can hold the kicking shield. Practice snapping the foot in slow motion so that you get the technique correctly. Concentrate on footwork and balance before, during, and after the kick. Note that the ball of the foot should hit the kicking shield in a straight trajectory. Practice low, mid, and high kicks.

Roundhouse Kick

The kicking shield should be held at an angle that aligns with the circular movement of the kick. Pivot on the standing foot and rotate your hips to generate power. Note the circular trajectory that the striking foot makes. Strike with the instep or the shin in a controlled manner before attempting to improve speed and power.

Side Kick

The kicking shield can be held at low, mid or high levels. Strike with the blade of the foot. Practice kicking in quick succession with each leg to improve speed. Your training partner may take an L-stance while holding the kicking shield. You can also practice flying side kicks. If your flying side kick is executed powerfully, then your training partner may place a chair behind him to fall upon, while holding the kicking shield at a high level.

Back Kick

A back kick can be surprising and also explosive. It is the opposite of front kick and follows a straight trajectory in a backward direction. The heel of the foot strikes the kicking shield.

Axe Kick

The holder may sit on a chair and firmly hold the kicking shield with both hands above his head. The height of the chair may be adjusted as per the required height. The leg should be raised and then brought down forcefully to hit the kicking shield with the heel. Balance should be maintained during the kick.

Spinning Kick

Spinning kicks may have multiple variations. Coordinate with the holder of the kicking shield so that it is held correctly for each type of variation.

Your training partner who holds the kicking shield plays a crucial role in improving your kicks. He can adjust the position, the height and the angle of the kicking shield as per your kick. Getting feedback from him is important. You can also switch roles, so that your training partner can also improve his kicks while you hold the kicking shield for him.
