Description

Good training pants are easy to overlook — until you’re wearing bad ones. If you’ve ever had to stop mid-drill to retie a waistband, or felt your pants pulling tight when you throw a high kick, you know how much difference the right pair makes. These 10oz canvas karate pants are built for everyday training: light enough for hot Australian dojos, tough enough to handle years of regular use, and cut properly for martial arts movement.

Why 10oz Canvas Works for Training

The weight of a fabric tells you a lot about how it will perform. At 10 ounces, this canvas is light enough that you won’t overheat during a long class, but it has enough body to move well and hold its shape. Lighter poly-cotton pants can feel flimsy and cling when you sweat. Heavier canvas (14oz or 16oz) gives you that satisfying snap on kicks but can feel stiff and heavy in a warm dojo.

For most regular training — kata, drills, sparring, pad work — 10oz is the sweet spot. It’s what a lot of practitioners reach for as their everyday pair.

100% Cotton: Breathability Matters

These pants are 100% cotton canvas. That matters more than you might think if you train in Queensland or anywhere warm. Synthetic fabrics trap heat. Cotton breathes, which means you stay cooler when you’re working hard. It also feels better against your skin during long sessions and is kind to training partners during grappling or close work.

Cotton does require a bit more care than synthetic blends — more on that below — but the comfort trade-off is well worth it for most people.

The Cut: Made for Martial Arts Movement

These are cut with a traditional martial arts fit — roomy through the thighs and seat, with enough length in the leg for full extension on kicks. This isn’t a slim-fit trouser that happens to be white. The cut is designed so you can throw a head-height kick without the fabric pulling tight across your hips or thighs.

The double stitching on stress points means the seams won’t give out when you push the range of motion. That’s where cheaper pants usually fail first.

Waistband: Elastic Plus Drawstring

The elastic waistband with an inner drawstring gives you two ways to get the fit right. The elastic means they’re easy to get on and off quickly, and the drawstring lets you dial in the fit precisely — useful if your waist and hip measurements don’t follow the size chart exactly, or if you lose or gain weight over a training season.

Sizing Guide

Sizes run from 3/160 to 7/200. The number before the slash is a loose size indicator; the number after is the approximate height in centimetres the pants are cut for.

These pants are cut for average proportions. If you’re taller than average for your weight, size up for the length and use the drawstring to take in the waist. If you’re broader or more solidly built than average, size up for your waist and hip measurement — you can always have the legs taken up by a tailor if needed. Size 7/200 runs very large; treat it as a generous fit for bigger frames.

See the size chart images on this page before ordering. If you’re between sizes and unsure, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to help you work it out.

What These Pants Are Good For

These work well for Karate, Taekwondo, and general martial arts training. They’re also a practical choice if you just want comfortable, durable training pants for home practice, bag work, or cross-training.

They’re not designed specifically for BJJ or judo — for grappling, you’d want pants with a reinforced drawstring system and tighter ankle cuffs (like our ripstop BJJ pants). For Karate or Taekwondo, though, these are a solid everyday option.

Care Instructions

Machine wash cold. Air dry where possible — this is the single best thing you can do to extend the life of cotton training gear. If you need to use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and pull them out as soon as they’re dry. High heat is what causes cotton to shrink and wear out prematurely.

What’s Not Included

Pants only. No jacket or belt included. If you need a matching top, check our canvas karate gi jackets. Belts are sold separately in our belts section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these pants shrink when I wash them?

Cotton canvas can shrink slightly with the first wash, which is normal. To minimise shrinkage, wash cold and air dry. Avoid hot dryer cycles — that’s where most of the shrinkage and premature wear happens with cotton training gear.

Are these suitable for BJJ training?

They’ll work for light BJJ drills or home practice, but they’re not specifically designed for grappling. For regular BJJ training, we’d recommend pants with a reinforced grappling-specific waistband and ankle cuffs — like our ripstop BJJ pants — which are built to handle the pulling and twisting that comes with ground work.

Can women wear these pants, and how should they size?

Yes, these are unisex and work well for women. Because they’re cut with a traditional martial arts fit (roomy through the hips and seat), many women find the fit comfortable. Use your hip measurement as your primary guide rather than waist — the drawstring will handle any adjustment needed at the waist.

What’s the difference between these and the 8oz poly-cotton pants?

The 8oz poly-cotton pants are lighter and less expensive — good for beginners or very light training. The 10oz canvas is heavier, more durable, 100% cotton (so more breathable), and will hold up better to regular hard training. If you’re training more than a couple of times a week, the 10oz canvas is the better investment.

Do I need to buy a jacket separately?

Yes — these are pants only. If you need a full gi for grading or competition, check our canvas karate gi jackets. We also carry matching canvas jackets that pair well with these pants.

What does the size number mean — for example, 5/180?

The first number (5) is a general size indicator. The second number (180) is the approximate wearer height in centimetres that the pants are cut for. So 5/180 is designed for someone around 180cm tall. If you’re taller than average for your weight, size up and use the drawstring to take in the waist. Size 7/200 runs very generously — it’s the largest size and suits bigger or taller frames.
