Description
What You’re Getting
This is a heavy-duty BJJ gi built for regular training. The 350gsm pearlweave jacket gives you a thicker, more substantial feel than lighter gis – it’s durable enough to handle years of rolling, but still comfortable enough for everyday training. The 10oz ripstop pants are reinforced where you need it most, with double-layer knee padding that actually makes a difference when you’re drilling takedowns or working guard passes.
Important: This gi does NOT include a belt. You’ll need to order one separately if you don’t already have one.
Why 350gsm Actually Matters
The 350gsm weight isn’t just a number – it affects how the gi performs on the mat. Heavier fabric like this is harder for training partners to grip and manipulate, which some people prefer. It also holds up better to constant washing and the wear of drilling the same techniques hundreds of times. The pearlweave construction creates a tighter weave that’s less likely to tear at stress points like the collar and sleeves.
The downside? A 350gsm gi takes longer to dry than a 250gsm gi. If you train daily and only have one gi, that could be an issue. It’s also not legal for IBJJF competition (they require gis under 350gsm for the jacket). But for training, this weight hits a sweet spot – durable without being unnecessarily bulky.
Construction Details That Matter
The EVA foam collar maintains its shape even after hundreds of training sessions. Cheap gis often have collars that go soft and floppy within months – this one won’t. The collar stays firm enough to protect your neck but isn’t so rigid it feels like you’re wearing a neck brace.
The ripstop pants use the same fabric you’ll find in parachutes and military gear. Those visible grid lines aren’t just cosmetic – they’re reinforcement threads that stop tears from spreading. When a regular cotton pant rips, it can run the entire length. Ripstop fabric contains the damage to one small section.
All major stress points – armpits, crotch, knee areas – have internal reinforcement patches. You can’t see them when you’re wearing the gi, but they’re there. The seams are triple-stitched and reinforced, not because it looks nice, but because those are the spots that fail first on cheap gis.
Sizing and Shrinkage
This gi is pre-washed twice before it ships, which takes care of most shrinkage. You’ll still see about 2-3cm of additional shrinkage after your first few washes, but that’s minimal compared to non-pre-washed gis that can shrink a full size.
Here’s how to pick your size: The first number is the jacket size, the second is your approximate height in centimeters. So 4/170 means size 4 jacket for someone around 170cm tall. If you’re between sizes or carry extra weight in your midsection, size up. A slightly loose gi is easier to train in than one that’s too tight across the shoulders or belly.
The jacket should fit so you can comfortably cross the lapels with about 5-10cm of overlap. If you can barely close it, go up a size. The sleeves should end around your wrist bone when your arms are relaxed at your sides – if they’re shorter, your academy might not let you roll (most require sleeves at least to mid-forearm).
For the pants, the drawstring allows for quite a bit of adjustment, but the leg length is what it is. They should hit around your ankle bone. If they’re dragging on the ground, they’re too long and you’ll trip on them. If they’re halfway up your shin, they’re too short and won’t pass academy rules.
Care Instructions
Wash this gi in cold water immediately after every training session. Don’t let it sit in your gym bag – that’s how you get permanent funk and bacteria buildup. Use regular detergent, but skip the fabric softener. Softener breaks down the cotton fibers over time and makes the gi wear out faster.
Air dry only. Never put this gi in the dryer unless you want to shrink it down two sizes and make the fabric board-stiff. Hang it up or lay it flat to dry. Yes, it takes longer than lighter gis, usually 24-36 hours depending on humidity. If you train every day, you’ll want two gis in your rotation.
What This Gi Is Good For
This is an everyday training gi. It’s built for the person who shows up three to five times a week and puts their gear through hell. The weight and construction mean it’ll last longer than budget gis, but it’s not so expensive that you’ll be devastated if someone accidentally bleeds on it or rips a sleeve.
It works well if you prefer a heavier gi that’s harder for opponents to grip and control. Some people find the extra weight gives them better proprioception – you’re more aware of where your body is in space when there’s more fabric moving with you.
What This Gi Isn’t Ideal For
If you compete in IBJJF tournaments, this won’t pass their weigh-in. They require jacket weight under 350gsm, and this is right at the limit. Some tournament organizers interpret the rule strictly and won’t allow it.
It’s also not the best choice if you live somewhere humid and train daily. The drying time becomes a real issue. And if you prefer a lighter, faster gi that doesn’t impede your movement as much, look at the 250gsm option instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this gi come with a belt?
No, the belt is sold separately. This is standard for BJJ gis since belt colour indicates rank and varies by practitioner.
How much will this gi shrink after washing?
It’s pre-washed twice, so you’ll see minimal additional shrinkage – usually 2-3cm in length after the first few washes. Always wash in cold water and air dry to prevent further shrinkage.
Is this gi legal for IBJJF competition?
No, IBJJF rules require jacket weight under 350gsm, and this gi is at the maximum weight. Some tournament officials may not allow it. This gi is designed for training, not competition.
What size should I order if I’m between sizes?
Size up if you’re between sizes or carry extra weight in your torso. A slightly loose gi is more comfortable than one that’s too tight. Check the size chart – the second number indicates height in centimeters.
How long does it take for this gi to air dry?
Expect 24-36 hours for complete drying, depending on humidity levels. The 350gsm fabric is heavier and holds more water than lighter gis. If you train daily, having two gis in rotation is recommended.
Can I put this gi in the dryer?
Never use a dryer. It will shrink the gi significantly and make the fabric stiff and uncomfortable. Always air dry by hanging or laying flat.
