Description

A solid beginner gi that won’t break the bank

If you’re just starting out in karate, taekwondo, or a similar striking art, you don’t need to spend a fortune on your first uniform. This 8oz cotton gi is exactly what it sounds like — a practical, affordable uniform made from 100% cotton that does the job well for regular training.

At a good 8oz weight it’s not a competition weight gi. It won’t impress the judges at a national tournament. But it’s durable for practitioners at all levels, and especially for your first year or two of training, or for a child who’s still figuring out if martial arts is their thing, it’s a sensible choice at $40.25.

Why cotton makes sense for training

Cotton is the original gi fabric, and there’s a reason it’s still around. It breathes well in warm weather, softens up nicely with washing, and sits comfortably against skin during long training sessions. If you’re in Queensland or anywhere in northern Australia where dojo temperatures climb, you’ll appreciate that cotton doesn’t trap heat the way synthetic blends can.

The trade-off is that cotton wrinkles easily and takes longer to dry than polycotton. If you’re training multiple days in a row, you’ll want to wash it straight after class and hang it out to dry overnight. In humid conditions, that can be tight.

At 8oz, this is a reasonable weight fabric — which suits hot weather and kids who find heavier gis cumbersome. It’s not as stiff or structured as the 10oz canvas gis, so it moves with you rather than against you.

What’s included

The set comes with three pieces: jacket, pants, and a white belt. The white belt is a basic starter belt — if you have a coloured belt from previous training, just swap it out. For a complete beginner walking into their first class, having the belt included means one less thing to sort out.

The jacket is cut generously through the shoulders and chest, which matters more than people realise. A gi that’s tight across the shoulders will restrict your punching range and make armbar escapes uncomfortable. This one gives you room to move.

The pants have an elasticated waist with an inner drawstring and a full gusset — that’s the extra fabric panel at the crotch. If you’re doing taekwondo or any style with high kicks, a gusset is essential. Without one, you’ll feel the seams pulling with every chamber kick.

Who this uniform is for

This gi works well for:

  • Children starting karate or taekwondo who may outgrow it within a year
  • Adults trying martial arts for the first time before committing to a more expensive uniform
  • Schools that supply uniforms to new students at low cost
  • Backup uniforms when your main gi is in the wash

It’s less suitable for:

  • Competition — most tournaments require specific uniform standards that a budget gi won’t meet
  • BJJ or judo — grappling arts need reinforced collars and heavier weaves that can handle gripping and throwing
  • Students who train five or more days a week and need something that holds up to heavy use long-term

Sizing guide

Pacific Sports uses a dual sizing system for this uniform: the first number is a size code (1–7) and the second is height in centimetres. So size 3/160 is designed for someone approximately 160cm tall.

The available sizes are:

  • 1/140 — approximately 140cm height
  • 2/150 — approximately 150cm height
  • 3/160 — approximately 160cm height
  • 4/170 — approximately 170cm height
  • 5/180 — approximately 180cm height
  • 6/190 — approximately 190cm height
  • 7/200 — approximately 200cm height

Gi sizing is based primarily on height, not weight. If you’re between sizes, go up — a slightly long sleeve is easier to manage than a jacket that pulls across the shoulders. Cotton also shrinks a little with the first few washes (about 3–5%), so sizing up gives you some buffer. Wash in cold water and air dry to minimise shrinkage after the initial wash.

If you’re buying for a child who’s growing quickly, consider sizing up one. The generous cut means a little extra room won’t look sloppy.

Care instructions

Wash cold, air dry. Cotton uniforms will shrink if put in a hot dryer, so avoid machine drying. Hang to dry in the shade — direct sunlight can yellow white cotton over time. Iron on medium heat if needed, though most people find the natural texture of cotton gi fabric acceptable without ironing.

FAQ

Does this uniform include a belt?
Yes, a white belt is included with the jacket and pants.
Is this suitable for BJJ training?
Not really. BJJ requires a heavier, reinforced gi with a stiffer collar designed to withstand gripping and takedowns. This cotton gi is fine for karate, taekwondo, and light practice, but it won’t hold up to the demands of regular BJJ training.
Will this shrink in the wash?
Cotton shrinks a little with the first few washes — typically 3–5%. Wash in cold water and air dry to keep shrinkage minimal. If you’re close to the boundary between two sizes, consider going up one size.
Can I use this for competition?
Most karate and taekwondo competitions have specific uniform requirements around weight, cut, and labelling. A budget cotton gi is generally fine for school gradings and club competitions, but check your specific association’s rules before entering open tournaments.
My child is growing fast — should I size up?
Yes, generally a good idea. The jacket is cut generously, so a slightly larger size won’t look oversized. Given kids grow fast and cotton shrinks a little, going up one size from the height chart usually works well.
How long will this uniform last?
With regular washing and air drying, this uniform holds up well for casual training — typically 1–3 years depending on frequency of use. The double stitching at the seams is the key durability feature. Students training daily or doing grappling arts may find it wears faster and should consider a heavier canvas gi.
