What Are Square Focus Pads?

Focus pads are the pad holder’s tool — you wear them on your hands so your training partner can punch, strike, or kick at a moving target. Unlike a heavy bag, working with a pad holder teaches you to read timing, adjust distance, and respond to a real person. These square PU focus pads give you a solid flat striking surface that works for punches, elbows, and kicks alike.

The square shape gives you more surface area than a round focus mitt, which matters when you’re drilling kicks or working with a less experienced holder. There’s less chance of a missed target and more confidence to throw with intent.

Who Are These For?

These pads work across a wide range of disciplines — Muay Thai, kickboxing, karate, taekwondo, MMA, and general fitness training. They’re a solid choice whether you’re just setting up a home training kit or looking for a durable pair for club use.

The flat square design makes them particularly good for:

  • Beginners learning to hold pads safely (the larger surface area forgives poor positioning)
  • Kick-heavy drilling where round mitts can be tricky to position correctly
  • Elbow combinations in Muay Thai and MMA
  • Mixed striking combos that blend punches, elbows, and kicks in one round

They’re not designed to replace curved focus mitts for heavy boxing-focused work. If you’re drilling fast hand combinations with a boxing coach, curved mitts give better feedback for punching technique. But for multi-discipline striking, these square pads are more versatile.

Construction and Materials

The outer shell is PU (polyurethane) leather — a synthetic material that handles sweat, repeated strikes, and storage better than genuine leather at this price point. You won’t need to condition or oil them, and they wipe clean easily after training.

Inside, the high-density foam filling is what takes the impact. Dense foam does two things: it absorbs the shock so it doesn’t transfer straight to the holder’s wrists and arms, and it holds its shape over time rather than flattening out. You’ve probably held pads that have lost their firmness — every strike feels sloppy and you can feel it in your hands. Good density prevents that.

At 30 × 25 cm, the striking surface is large enough to be a practical target for both hand and kick techniques. The 15 cm depth gives enough foam to cushion harder shots without the pad bottoming out.

Using These Pads: Holder and Striker Tips

For the holder: Square pads are forgiving to hold because the flat face gives the striker a clear target. Keep your wrists straight and brace through the forearm — don’t try to absorb the impact with loose wrists. For kicks, turn the pad side-on and lean into it rather than just holding it out flat.

For the striker: The flat surface gives you honest feedback on your technique. If you’re clipping the edge, your aim or distance is off. Use that information.

Elbows: These pads are suitable for elbow strikes, which many round mitts aren’t designed for. The surface area handles the impact well.

Care and Maintenance

After each session, wipe the striking surface down with a damp cloth or mild antibacterial wipe. Let them air dry completely before storing — trapping moisture inside a bag will degrade the foam faster. Don’t leave them in a hot car; prolonged heat causes PU to crack and the foam to break down. A ventilated gear bag or open shelf is ideal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between square focus pads and curved focus mitts?

Square pads have a flat striking surface and more overall area, making them better for kick drills and multi-discipline training where you’re mixing punches, elbows, and kicks. Curved mitts cup slightly to guide punches in and give more feedback for boxing technique. If you’re primarily boxing, curved mitts are better. If you’re training Muay Thai, kickboxing, or doing mixed striking, square pads are more practical.

Can these be used for kick training?

Yes — they’re well suited to it. The 30 × 25 cm flat face gives a solid target for round kicks, push kicks, and knee strikes. When holding for kicks, turn the pad side-on and brace through your shoulder rather than just extending your arm.

Are these suitable for beginners?

Yes, for both the striker and the holder. The large flat surface means less precise targeting is needed to land cleanly, which helps beginners build confidence before moving to smaller curved mitts. For new holders, the straightforward flat face is easier to position correctly.

Can these be used for elbow strikes?

Yes. The flat surface and high-density filling handles elbow strikes well. Many round focus mitts aren’t ideal for elbows because of the curved shape and less surface area — these square pads work better for Muay Thai-style combinations that include elbows.

How long will these pads last?

That depends heavily on training frequency and how well you care for them. For regular club use — a few sessions per week — PU pads typically last 1–3 years before the outer starts to show wear. Wiping them down after each session and keeping them out of prolonged heat will extend their life considerably.

Do I need gloves to hit these pads?

For hand striking, yes — you should always wear boxing or MMA gloves with hand wraps when hitting any pads. Bare-knuckle pad work puts your hand and wrist joints at risk. For kick-only drills, bare feet or light shoes are fine depending on your discipline.
