Promoted and need a new gi belt?

Congratulations on your promotion to a higher level belt. It shows your dedication, your hard work and your tremendous effort. Pacific Sports offers belts of all colours so that you can easily find the one that you need. Belts have 8 lines of stitching, and the ends are sewn, so that they do not get frayed at the edges. Additionally, premium quality cotton 5cm wide black belts with 11 rows of stitching are also available. Belts come in different sizes that correspond to the uniform size.

Along with a new belt, you may also consider buying a new gi, or just a new jacket or just a pair of new pants. Wear the belt with pride

When you wear your gi (martial arts uniform), which consists of a jacket (uwagi), pants (zubon/shitabaki), and a belt (obi), you wear it pride. The belt indicates your rank. It shows the level of skill attained and is a visible proof of your commitment.

Respect tradition

The martial arts uniform (gi) also shows that you respect the Japanese tradition of your martial art. Traditionally, the left lapel is crossed over the right lapel of the jacket, and then both lapels are secured with the belt tied over them. Tie the belt correctly as shown by your instructor.

Secure the jacket with the belt

Both lapels of the jacket are secured with a belt, so that the lapels do not ride up or become undone while practicing. After tying your belt, you may raise both your arms, so that a little bit of the lapel can come up and the belt won’t hinder the full range of motion of your arms.

Wash the belt

After every intense training session, you should wash your gi and the belt, so that your martial arts uniform remain clean and hygienic. You can wash in normal cold water and hang it to dry in the sun or indoors. If you dry it outdoors in the sun, then don’t keep it very long in the sun, otherwise the colour of the belt may fade due to the strong rays of the sun.

Besides a new belt, you may also need a new jacket or a new pair of pants. Instead of buying a new gi, you can separately purchase just the jacket or the pants.

Pacific Sports Gi Jackets

Jackets are white in colour and they are available from 8oz to 16oz in Canvas, Cotton, and Poly-Cotton fabrics. They are pre-shrunk so that you can have a perfect fit. However, some jackets are not pre-shrunk, but they are made with a shrinkage allowance that allows for natural shrinkage, so you can buy your regular size. The cut is European and they are available in various sizes. The collar and sleeves feature multiple lines of stitching that prevents wear and tear. Please see the size chart to find your size.

  • Consumer satisfying attributes of a gi

A study by Perry, A. & Lee, J. (2017) has found that consumers were satisfied with their current gi because of its quality, fit, and comfort. Whereas, while buying a new gi, they looked for functional and aesthetic attributes. Quality of the gi is a prime consideration. A high quality gi is durable, sewn well, should be fitting and be available in your chosen colour, fabric, and size. The stitching of the gi should be of high quality so that while performing complex techniques, it does not tear, especially at pressure points areas. Pacific Sports gi have heavy-duty double stitching at the seams. A full gusset in the pants allows room for deep stretches and high kicks without pulling at the seams. Gi made for Jiu Jitsu or BJJ, feature extra stitching at the knees, to enhance durability of the fabric.

    Should a gi be ironed?

Ironing a gi depends on your individual need and preference. You may wear a gi that is ironed or un-ironed. Some schools insist on ironing a gi, while some don’t. Always ask your instructor whether ironing should be done or not. Usually, a martial artist keeps three sets of a gi. Two sets are for practice, while one set is kept aside for grading, demonstration, or competition. Generally, the two sets meant for practice are not ironed, while the gi kept for grading, demonstration, or competition is ironed. Pacific Sports offers high-quality gi, which may or may not be ironed as per your requirement, to practitioners of Taekwondo, Karate, BJJ, Jiu-Jitsu, and Judo from all around the world.
