Differentiating factors

Although they are all shorts, yet the major differentiating factors are length, material, cut, design, fit, and functionality.

Length

Muay Thai shorts are shorter in length, whereas Kickboxing, MMA, and compression shorts are almost of the same length.

Material

Muay Thai shorts are generally made by mixing polyester with satin or silk. Polyester gives it a long durability, while satin or silk gives it a glossy shine. Kickboxing and MMA shorts are usually made from 100% polyester, or a blend of polyester and satin/silk. Compression shorts are usually made from polyester mixed with Lycra or spandex. Polyester gives the required strength to the fabric, while Lycra makes it stretchable.

Cut

Muay Thai shorts feature side splits to enable higher knee strikes. Kickboxing shorts also have side splits so that high kicks can be easily performed. MMA shorts usually do not have side splits but are tight fitting to provide easy range of motion. Compression shorts do not have side splits.

Design

All shorts come in several attractive designs; however, Muay Thai shorts have the most striking colour combinations with Thai lettering as an additional design feature. Kickboxing and MMA shorts usually feature geometric designs, while compression shorts are normally in plain colours without any design.

Fit

Muay Thai shorts are loose fitting and shorter in length, which provides ample room for free leg movement. Kickboxing and MMA shorts are medium or tight fitting to provide full range of motion. Compression shorts are tight fitting and are almost like a second skin.

Functionality

The length, material, cut, design, and fit, provide the functionality of the shorts. The shorts should be functional so that all techniques may be easily executed without any restriction. They should withstand the stress of intensive practice or competition. Additionally, they should look good and feel comfortable.

For a no-holds barred training, instead of sparring with a partner, one can practice with one or more multipurpose pads. A martial artist can use full power in the strikes and get almost the same benefit as sparring with a partner.
