Single and Double Paddle

A paddle can be a single paddle or a double paddle. The function of both the paddles is the same as they both serve as targets to be kicked. Both paddles can absorb the shock of the kicks; however, a double paddle produces a greater slapping sound, which encourages the martial artist to kick with more precision, more power, and more speed. You can use any paddle for your training as both will serve equally well.

Grip

If you grip the handle of the paddle too tightly, your hand will become stiff and upon impact your arm may be hurt. If you grip it too loosely, then it will fly away from your hand if the kick is powerful. You have to grip the handle with a moderate pressure. The middle portion of the handle should be gripped instead of the top or the bottom.

Wrist

Make sure that your wrist aligns in a straight line with your arm. Don’t bend the wrist upwards or downwards. The paddle will be between 90-120 degrees with your arm. Lower or raise your arm to adjust the height of the paddle, instead of bending your wrist up or down.

Stance

Take a walking stance or an L-stance, so that your stability is maintained when the kick lands on the paddle. With practice, you can change stances as you move around to give your partner more training with a paddle in motion.

Accuracy

Ensure that your training partner hits the centre of the striking area of the paddle. Neither the top nor the bottom should be hit. Inform your partner to adjust the kicks accordingly so that only the centre portion is hit.

Power

Once accuracy is achieved, your partner should hit the paddle with full power. Give your feedback so that your training partner can accordingly adjust the power in the kicks.

Speed

With accuracy and power, the kicks should also be fast. Count the number of seconds taken to hit the paddle sixty times repeatedly with the same kick in a fast manner. Your partner should try to decrease the time taken. While increasing the speed, accuracy and power should not be compromised.

Practice both sides

Practice with the left foot and the right foot, individually or in combination. Hold two paddles, one in each hand, so that your partner can deliver both left leg kicks and right leg kicks one after the other.

Change roles

After your partner has practiced his/her kicks, now change roles and ask your partner to hold the paddle while you practice your kicks.

Pacific Sports taekwondo paddle is an excellent training equipment and lasts a very long time. After you and your partner have practiced kicks, you may also practice punches with Pacific Sports focus mitts and focus pads.
