Description
If you’re looking for a lightweight canvas karate gi that’s tough enough to handle years of regular training but light enough to move in without feeling weighed down, this 10oz canvas white karate gi is worth a close look. It sits in the lighter end of the canvas range — heavier than the poly/cotton uniforms you’ll find at sports stores, but not as stiff as the 14oz or 16oz options. That middle ground suits a lot of karate practitioners, particularly those doing general training, kata, or club sessions where you need a gi that lasts without restricting your movement.
Why 10oz Canvas?
Canvas gis have a reputation for durability that poly/cotton blends simply can’t match. The weave is tighter and more robust, which means the fabric resists tearing along stress points like the collar, armpits, and cuffs — exactly where most gis fail first.
The 10oz weight is a good starting point if you’ve been training in a lighter poly/cotton gi and want to step up to something more serious, but you’re not sure you want the full stiffness of a heavier canvas. It’s also a practical choice in warmer climates — useful in Queensland and other parts of Australia where training through summer in a 16oz gi isn’t particularly comfortable.
One thing worth knowing about canvas: it improves with wear. A new canvas gi feels firmer than you might expect. After a few washes and training sessions, it softens and starts to feel broken in. That’s normal — it’s not a defect, it’s just how canvas behaves.
Construction Details That Matter
The jacket is cut generously through the shoulders and chest. This isn’t just about comfort — it directly affects how freely you can perform techniques. A jacket that pulls across the back when you raise your arms is going to restrict your punches and blocks, and it’ll wear faster at the seams. The cut here gives you the range of motion you need without the gi working against you.
The pants have a full gusset — the reinforced diamond-shaped panel sewn into the crotch seam. For karate specifically, this matters a lot. High kicks, deep stances, and rapid directional changes put serious stress on the inner seam of the pants. A gusset distributes that stress across a wider area, preventing the split seam that’s every karateka’s wardrobe nightmare mid-class. If you kick and you’ve split a pair of gi pants before, you’ll appreciate this detail.
The waistband is elasticated with a drawstring for extra adjustment. The elastic means the pants stay up even during fast movement, while the drawstring lets you dial in the fit — useful if you’re between sizes or if the gi stretches slightly after washing.
What This Gi Is Good For
This gi suits general karate training well — Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Wado-ryu, Kyokushin, and most other styles where you’re doing a mix of kata, kihon, and kumite in regular club training.
It’s also a reasonable option for beginners who’ve outgrown a starter uniform and want something more durable, without spending on a heavier competition-grade gi they may not need yet.
Where it’s less ideal: If your dojo specifies a particular gi for grading or competition — especially if there are weight requirements — check those requirements before ordering. Some competition formats specify minimum weights, and some require WKF-approved uniforms. This gi doesn’t carry WKF approval, so it won’t suit WKF competition use.
Sizing Guide
This gi is currently available in two sizes: 3/160 and 6/190. The first number is the size grade and the second is the approximate height in centimetres the size is designed for.
Canvas gis don’t have the stretch that poly/cotton does, so sizing to your actual height is important. If you’re between sizes, go up rather than down — a gi that’s slightly long is manageable (you can roll the sleeves or pants), but one that’s too short will restrict your movement and wear out faster at the seams.
Use the size chart images above for specific measurements across chest, sleeve length, and leg length. If you’re unsure which size fits your build, feel free to contact us before ordering.
Care Instructions
Wash cold (30°C maximum) to prevent shrinkage and preserve the canvas structure. Don’t use bleach — it weakens the fibres and yellows the white over time, even if it seems to brighten things initially. Tumble dry on low heat or, better yet, air dry. Canvas holds its shape better when air-dried flat or on a hanger.
New canvas gis may bleed slightly in the first wash — wash separately the first couple of times to avoid discolouring anything else in the load.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a belt included with this gi?
No. This gi includes the jacket and pants only. Belts are sold separately in our store.
Will this gi shrink after washing?
Canvas can shrink if washed in hot water or dried on high heat. Wash cold (30°C or below) and air dry or tumble dry on low. Follow these steps and you shouldn’t see significant shrinkage.
Is this gi approved for WKF competition?
Yes. This gi is WKF-approved. It’s suitable for general club training, grading, and WKF events, but if you’re competing under WKF rules, check with your association for their specific uniform requirements.
The gi feels quite stiff — is that normal?
Yes, completely normal for canvas. New canvas gis are firmer than poly/cotton. After a few washes and training sessions it softens noticeably and becomes much more comfortable. Give it time — this is one of the things experienced practitioners mean when they say a canvas gi “improves with wear.”
Several sizes are two sizes are listed. How to choose my fit?
This gi is currently stocked in sizes 2/150, 3/160, 4/170, 5/180 and 6/190. If unsure about your size, contact us before ordering — we may be able to help.
What’s the difference between this and the heavier canvas gis you stock?
The main differences are weight, stiffness, and the characteristic “snap” sound when techniques are performed. Heavier gis (14oz–18oz) are stiffer, more formal-looking, and produce a more pronounced sound with sharp techniques — which is why some instructors prefer them for grading and demonstration. The 10oz is lighter and more flexible, making it a practical everyday training gi, especially in warmer weather.
