Description

8oz Cotton V-neck Taekwondo Uniform

If you’re training more than a couple of times a week, or you’re serious about how your uniform looks and feels, the 100% cotton dobok is worth the step up from poly/cotton. Cotton breathes better, feels softer against the skin, and has a cleaner, crisper look — the kind that doesn’t wrinkle into a crumpled mess by the end of the session. It costs more and needs a bit more care in the wash, but for regular training, most practitioners find the difference noticeable from the first wear.

Available in three versions: plain white with no branding, with the ITF logo and print at the centre front V, or with print only (no logo embroidery). The no-branding option works well for clubs with their own patches or anyone who doesn’t want association-specific markings. The ITF logo and print version is the right choice if you’re training in ITF Taekwondo and want the traditional look. The print-only version sits in between — the design detail without the embroidered badge.

Why cotton for Taekwondo training

Cotton and poly/cotton blends both work for training, but they’re not the same experience. Pure cotton breathes better and feels less synthetic against the skin — this matters in a long session when you’re sweating heavily and the uniform is pressing against you with every technique. It also drapes and moves differently: a good cotton dobok has a weight and presence to it that poly/cotton doesn’t quite replicate.

The trade-off is practical. Cotton takes longer to dry than poly/cotton, and it will shrink if you wash it hot. It can also need ironing to look its best before gradings or demonstrations. For everyday training, most people don’t bother — but for instructors, grading days, or anyone who cares about presenting well on the mat, cotton is the standard.

At 8oz, this is a medium-weight fabric — heavier than the lightweight competition doboks used at tournaments, which makes it more durable for regular training. It’s not as heavy as a 12oz canvas uniform, which is better suited to heavy contact or demonstrations. For club training from beginner through to black belt, 8oz cotton sits in the right range.

Construction

The seams are double-stitched with heavy-duty thread throughout. Taekwondo is hard on uniform seams — the combination of high kicks, deep stances, and regular washing wears out stitching faster than most people expect. Double stitching at the stress points (underarm, crotch, and trouser inseams) is what separates uniforms that last a few months from ones that stay in rotation for years.

The jacket is cut generously through the shoulders and chest. This isn’t just about comfort — it’s about not being limited when you’re doing arm techniques, blocking, or chambering for a kick. A jacket that fits too closely across the shoulders will pull and restrict your range of motion without you necessarily realising it. The generous cut means you move freely without the fabric working against you.

The pants have a full gusset — a reinforcing panel at the crotch that gives the extra material needed for deep stances and high kicks without the seam pulling or splitting. The waist is elasticated with an inner drawstring so you can dial in the fit, which is useful if your waist and height don’t sit in the same size bracket.

What’s included

Each uniform comes with the jacket, pants, and a white belt. If you’re already a graded student, the white belt is just for completeness — most instructors issue belts as part of the grading process and you probably already have yours. If you need a coloured belt or a replacement, those are sold separately.

Sizing

These uniforms use a two-number system: the first number is the size, and the second is the approximate height in centimetres it’s designed for. Size 2/150 is for someone around 150cm tall; size 4/170 is for someone around 170cm. Use height as your main guide — it’s a more reliable fit indicator than age, especially for children who can vary significantly in build at the same age.

The cut is generous, which is good for movement but means you should avoid sizing up if you’re between sizes. A uniform that’s too large looks baggy and can catch on your arms or legs during techniques. If anything, err toward the smaller size — the fabric has enough room that a snug fit in the sizing chart usually still gives plenty of movement on the mat.

This range starts at 0/130, which is for children around 130cm tall — typically 8 to 10 years old depending on build. If you need a uniform for a younger child (under 130cm), the poly/cotton range starts smaller and may be a better fit both in size and price for that age group.

  • 0/130 — approx. 130cm height
  • 1/140 — approx. 140cm height
  • 2/150 — approx. 150cm height
  • 3/160 — approx. 160cm height
  • 4/170 — approx. 170cm height
  • 5/180 — approx. 180cm height
  • 6/190 — approx. 190cm height

Care

Machine wash cold or warm — not hot. Cotton shrinks when washed hot, especially in the first few washes, and once it’s gone in that you can’t get it back. Cold or warm water keeps the size stable. Hang to dry or tumble dry on low. A medium iron will take out any wrinkles if you need it looking sharp for a grading or demonstration.

Wash after every training session. Sweat left in cotton degrades the fibres over time and shortens the life of the uniform — and it’s not doing anyone around you any favours either.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between this and the poly/cotton uniform?
The main differences are fabric feel and price. This is 100% cotton, which breathes better and feels softer — particularly noticeable in longer training sessions. It costs more, takes longer to dry, and can shrink if washed hot. The poly/cotton version is more practical for kids who are still growing or for anyone who wants a lower-cost option for everyday training. Both use the same construction and cut.
Is this uniform approved for ITF Taekwondo competition?
The ITF logo and print version is suitable for club training and most local competitions. For national or international ITF events, check with your instructor or the relevant association about approved specifications — some events require specific brands or heavier canvas uniforms. If in doubt, ask before you buy.
Will this uniform shrink in the wash?
Yes, cotton can shrink — particularly in the first couple of washes. Wash cold or warm (never hot) and hang or tumble dry on low to keep shrinkage to a minimum. If you’re between sizes, factor this in when deciding. Once cotton has shrunk, it stays shrunk.
My child is between sizes — should I size up?
In most cases, no. The cut is generous, so the smaller size will usually still give plenty of room to move. A uniform that’s too large gets in the way during training and looks untidy. The exception is if your child is growing fast and you want extra room for growth — in that case, sizing up with the expectation that it’ll fit better in a few months is reasonable.
Can I use this for Karate or other martial arts?
The V-neck collar is specific to Taekwondo. It’s not the right cut for Karate (which uses a different lapel style) or for BJJ or Judo. If you’re looking for a gi for grappling arts, those are a different garment entirely. This uniform suits ITF-style Taekwondo and similar arts that use the V-neck dobok style.
Is the white belt included?
Yes, a white belt is included. For beginners, it’s ready to use. For graded students, it’s there for completeness — your coloured belt from grading is the one you’ll actually wear. Replacement belts and coloured belts are sold separately if you need them.
