Description
Canvas karate gis last. That’s the short version. If you’ve trained in a poly/cotton uniform and kept replacing it every couple of years because the collar frays or the knee panels thin out, a canvas gi solves that problem. These 10oz and 12oz white canvas gis are WKF-approved, built with a generous cut that doesn’t fight you during technique, and pre-shrunk so what arrives is what you’ll keep wearing.
The choice between 10oz and 12oz comes down to your training environment and personal preference. Both are durable and practical. The 10oz is lighter and more flexible — a good everyday trainer, particularly if your dojo runs warm or you move between a lot of sessions. The 12oz has a denser weave that adds structure and longevity; it’s the better choice if you want a gi that still looks crisp at a grading three years from now.
Why Canvas?
Gi fabric weight is measured in ounces per square yard. The higher the number, the denser the weave — and the more stress the fabric can absorb before it gives way. Poly/cotton gis are fine when you’re starting out, but the collar, sleeve ends, and knee panels take a lot of punishment in regular training. Canvas holds up where poly/cotton doesn’t.
The trade-off is that a new canvas gi feels stiffer than you might expect coming from a lighter uniform. That’s not a defect — it’s how canvas behaves. After a few washes and training sessions it softens noticeably and becomes much more comfortable. Experienced practitioners know this well; it’s what people mean when they say a canvas gi “improves with wear.”
Construction Details That Matter
The jacket is cut generously through the shoulders and chest. This matters more than people realise. A tight cut across the upper back restricts your punches, blocks, and any technique that raises your arms. You want fabric that moves with you, not against you — and this cut gives you that range without the gi pulling at the seams.
The pants have a full gusset — a reinforced panel sewn into the crotch area. For karate, this is important. High kicks, deep horse stances, and front stretches put serious stress on the inner seam. A gusset distributes that stress across a wider area rather than concentrating it at a single point. If you’ve ever split a pair of gi pants mid-kick, you’ll understand why this detail is worth having.
The waistband uses both elastic and a drawstring. The elastic keeps the pants in place during fast movement; the drawstring lets you adjust the fit precisely, which is useful if your waist and height don’t follow standard proportions exactly.
All seams are double-reinforced. Every time someone grabs your lapel in kumite, or you drop into a low stance, those seams are under load. Double stitching spreads that load across two rows of thread instead of one — a straightforward detail that adds real years to the life of the gi.
Pre-Shrunk
Both the 10oz and 12oz are pre-shrunk. Canvas gis that haven’t been pre-treated can shrink significantly in the wash — sometimes enough to make a correctly-sized gi unwearable. Pre-shrinking removes most of that risk. You may notice very minor shrinkage after the first wash, which is normal with canvas, but nothing dramatic. Wash cold and hang dry and it stays true to size.
WKF Approved
Both weights carry WKF approval, so they’re tournament-legal for most karate organisations. Whether you’re training for a club grading or competing at an open tournament, you won’t be turned away at the door for your uniform.
What These Gis Are Good For
Both the 10oz and 12oz suit general karate training across most styles — Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Wado-ryu, Kyokushin, and others. The white canvas is appropriate for both regular club sessions and competition.
Not suitable for BJJ. The cut and fabric weave of a karate gi are different to what you need for grappling — the lapels are narrower, the jacket shorter, and canvas isn’t built for the mat friction that BJJ involves. If you train BJJ, you need a purpose-built BJJ gi.
Sizing
These gis are sized by height, which is standard for martial arts uniforms. The sizes run:
- 3/160 — suits height around 160cm
- 4/170 — suits height around 170cm
- 5/180 — suits height around 180cm
- 6/190 — suits height around 190cm
- 7/200 — suits height around 200cm
Canvas doesn’t have the give that poly/cotton does, so getting the size right matters. Check the size chart images on this page for detailed measurements across chest width, sleeve length, and pants inseam. If you’re between sizes, go up rather than down — a slightly longer jacket looks more professional and gives you room to move, and you can take in the pants waist with the drawstring. A gi that’s too short will ride up when you raise your arms and restrict your technique.
If you’re above 200cm or have an unusually broad build, contact us before ordering — we can advise on whether a size 7/200 is likely to fit or point you toward alternatives.
For juniors: this size range suits older teens and adults. If you’re buying for a child or smaller junior, check our other uniform options.
Care Instructions
Machine wash cold. Hang dry, or tumble dry on low if needed. Don’t use bleach — it weakens canvas fibres and yellows the fabric over time. If you train frequently, rotating between two gis gives each one time to fully air out between sessions, which helps the fabric last longer and reduces odour build-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the belt included with this gi?
No. The jacket and pants are included, but the belt is sold separately. You can add a belt to your order and they’ll ship together. Free shipping applies on orders over $150, so it’s worth adding one if you’re close to that threshold.
What’s the difference between the 10oz and 12oz?
The 10oz is lighter and more flexible — a good everyday trainer, especially in warmer conditions or if you do a high volume of sessions. The 12oz has a denser weave that adds structure and holds its shape better over time. Both are durable, WKF-approved, and pre-shrunk. If you train hard several times a week and want a gi that still looks good at a grading a few years from now, the 12oz is the better long-term choice. If comfort and freedom of movement are the priority, the 10oz delivers that.
Are these gis WKF approved?
Yes, both the 10oz and 12oz carry WKF approval and are suitable for training and competition under WKF rules. Check with your specific association for any additional uniform requirements they may have.
Will the gi shrink when I wash it?
Both gis are pre-shrunk, so significant shrinkage is unlikely. There may be very minor shrinkage after the first wash — that’s normal with canvas — but nothing that will change the fit substantially. Wash cold and hang dry to keep it to a minimum.
I’m between sizes — should I size up or down?
Size up. A slightly longer jacket looks more professional and gives you room to move. You can tighten the pants waist with the drawstring. A gi that’s too short will ride up when you raise your arms and restrict your technique. If you’re unsure, use the size chart in the product images and feel free to contact us before ordering.
Can I use this gi for BJJ?
No — these are karate gis and aren’t suited to BJJ training. The cut is different, the lapels are narrower, and canvas doesn’t handle the mat friction of regular grappling as well as a purpose-built BJJ gi. If you train BJJ, you need a different uniform.
