Description
If you’ve been looking at the 14oz canvas jacket and wondering whether the heavier option is worth it, here’s the honest answer: it depends on how seriously you train, and whether you want a jacket that will outlast the rest of your gear by years. The 16oz canvas jacket is the heaviest pre-shrunk jacket in the range. It’s stiff when new, it takes a few sessions to break in, and once it does it becomes one of the most satisfying jackets you’ll own. It’s the choice instructors make and the one senior practitioners graduate to when they’re ready for something that matches their level of commitment.
16oz vs 14oz — What the Weight Difference Actually Means
Both jackets are pre-shrunk cotton canvas in a European cut. The 16oz is noticeably heavier and denser than the 14oz — you feel the difference immediately when you pick it up. In practical terms, that means three things:
More durability: The thicker, tighter weave resists tearing and seam stress better than 14oz. If you train multiple times a week with a lot of partner work, sleeve grabs, and partner drills, the extra weight in the fabric is what keeps the jacket together for years rather than seasons.
Better technique sound: Heavy canvas snaps with a sharp, audible crack when you execute a clean block or strike. At 16oz this is more pronounced than at 14oz. In kata and basics, that sound tells you — and your instructor — that your technique has real commitment behind it. You can’t fake crisp technique in a heavy gi jacket.
Longer break-in period: This is the trade-off worth knowing about. The 16oz will feel board-stiff straight out of the bag. That’s completely normal — it’s not a defect. After several washes and training sessions the canvas softens and moulds to your body. Most practitioners describe the broken-in feel as excellent; it just takes a bit of patience to get there.
Construction
16oz cotton canvas: Dense, tightly woven, and built for longevity. Pure cotton rather than a cotton-poly blend — it breathes better during long sessions and feels more comfortable against the skin, though it takes longer to dry than synthetic alternatives. Plan washing accordingly: don’t leave it damp in a bag.
European cut: Cut closer to the body than traditional Japanese-style gi tops. This gives a cleaner silhouette and reduces excess fabric through the shoulders and torso — excess fabric that can get in the way of your technique and gives an opponent more to grab in partner work. The European cut suits a wider range of body shapes than the boxier traditional cut.
Pre-shrunk: The canvas has been pre-shrunk before the jacket is made, so sizing is stable and predictable from the first wash onward. You don’t need to size up to compensate for shrinkage. This is important when you’re buying the jacket separately from pants — predictable sizing means you can confidently match sizes across pieces.
White Only
This jacket is available in white only. White is the standard for Karate and Taekwondo gradings and most competitions. If you need a black jacket, the 12oz and 14oz pre-shrunk jackets are available in both white and black.
Who This Jacket Is For
Instructors, senior grades, and practitioners who train three or more times per week and want the heaviest pre-shrunk jacket in the range. If you’re still in your first couple of years of training, the 16oz weight is a lot to manage while you’re building foundational movement — an 8oz or 10oz jacket is more practical for that stage. If you’ve been training consistently for a few years and you want something that reflects your commitment level, this is the right step.
It’s sold without pants — that’s intentional. Many practitioners find their jacket and pants sizes don’t match, and buying separately means you can get both right. We sell matching canvas karate pants separately if you need them.
Sizing
Available in sizes 4/170, 5/180, 6/190, and 7/200. The second number is the height in centimetres the size is designed for. Match your height first, then refer to the size chart on this page for detailed measurements. If you’re broader through the shoulders and chest, size up — the jacket fit is fixed, so getting the shoulder fit right matters more than anything else.
Because the jacket is pre-shrunk, the size chart measurements are stable. No need to allow for shrinkage or size up to compensate.
Care Instructions
Machine wash cold (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry — hang or lay flat to dry to maintain shape and prevent any further shrinkage. Cool iron if needed, avoiding labels. Do not dry clean. Wash after every session — cotton absorbs sweat and bacteria builds up in heavy canvas quickly if left unwashed.
What’s Not Included
Jacket only — pants and belt are sold separately. If you need a belt, mention it when you place your order and we can include one in the same package. Your jacket size is your belt size — a 5/180 jacket takes a 5/180 belt.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does 16oz canvas compare to 14oz?
16oz is noticeably heavier and denser than 14oz. You get more durability and a sharper technique sound, but also a stiffer feel when new and a longer break-in period. If you’ve been training consistently for several years and train frequently, 16oz is the premium choice. If you want substantial canvas without the maximum weight, 14oz is the practical middle ground.
Will this jacket shrink after washing?
Very minimally, if at all. The fabric is pre-shrunk before the jacket is made, so the size chart measurements are stable. Wash cold and hang to dry every time. Don’t tumble dry — heat is the main cause of shrinkage in cotton canvas.
The jacket feels very stiff out of the bag. Is that normal?
Completely normal for 16oz canvas. This is the heaviest pre-shrunk jacket in the range and it will feel board-stiff when new. After several washes and training sessions the canvas relaxes and moulds to your body. Most practitioners find the broken-in feel excellent — worth persisting through those first few sessions.
Why is it only available in white?
This is a heavyweight jacket suited to experienced practitioners and most traditional competition contexts, where white is the standard. If you need a black canvas jacket, the 12oz and 14oz pre-shrunk jackets are available in both white and black.
Is 16oz canvas suitable for beginners?
Not really. The weight and stiffness of a 16oz jacket makes it genuinely difficult to train in when you’re still building foundational movement. An 8oz or 10oz jacket is much more practical for the first couple of years. Once you’re established and want something that matches your commitment level, this is the right step up.
How do I read the sizing — what does 5/180 mean?
The second number is the height in centimetres the size is cut for. Size 5/180 suits approximately 170–180cm, 6/190 suits 180–190cm, and so on. Match the height number to your height first, then check the size chart on this page. If you’re broader through the shoulders, go up a size — the jacket fit is fixed, so shoulder fit matters most.
