Ironing a gi depends on your individual need and preference. You may wear a gi that is ironed or un-ironed. Some schools insist on ironing a gi, while some don’t. Always ask your instructor whether ironing should be done or not. Usually, a martial artist keeps three sets of a gi. Two sets are for practice, while one set is kept aside for grading, demonstration, or competition. Generally, the two sets meant for practice are not ironed, while the gi kept for grading, demonstration, or competition is ironed. Pacific Sports offers high-quality gi, which may or may not be ironed as per your requirement, to practitioners of Taekwondo, Karate, BJJ, Jiu-Jitsu, and Judo from all around the world.

When is a gi usually not ironed?
Two sets of a gi are kept for daily practice, so that while one set is being used, the other set is being washed and dried. By this method, the martial artist can wear a clean, washed gi every day for practice. Washing can be done by machine or by hand in room temperature water. Washing removes all sweat, stains, and dirt. Thereafter, the gi is dried in the sun. When the gi is placed on the clothesline to dry, both the jacket and the pants are sufficiently stretched manually, which makes the fabric free of most wrinkles. The heat of the sun irons out almost all of the remaining wrinkles. Hence, these practice gis are not normally ironed.
Note: If the gi is not properly stretched and dried in the sun, then the gi should always be ironed before use.
When is a gi usually always ironed?
The third set of a gi is kept aside and used very sparingly. It is washed, dried, ironed and kept in some box or any container designed to store clothing, so that the brand-new look of the gi is preserved. This gi is used for special occasions only, like a grading, demonstration or a competition. Wearing an absolutely new gi is generally not recommended, as the new gi may feel a bit awkward on the body. After a gi is bought, you should try it on to see the fitting. If the fitting is not satisfactory then you may replace it. If the gi fits well, then you can do some light practice while wearing it, so that your body becomes used to it. Thereafter, the gi is washed, dried, ironed, and preserved, only to be used occasionally, as and when some occasion arises.
Ironing tips
Sometimes, especially in crowded urban cities, it is difficult to get an outdoor clothesline in order to dry the gi in the sun. At other times, the gi is dried in a drying machine or under a fan. Alternatively, irrespective of whether the gi is dried in the sun or not, you may desire to wear a gi that is always ironed. In all such instances, few ironing tips as given below, may be followed.
—Iron temperature. Set the temperature of the iron as per the fabric of your gi. The fabric can be canvas, cotton, or a blend of poly-cotton. They need different temperatures, and the heat of the iron should be regulated accordingly.
—Avoid direct ironing. If your gi has embroidery, printing, or patches on it, then avoid applying the iron directly on them. The threads of the embroidery may get discoloured, the printing may get faded, or the patch may stick to the iron, due to the heat of the iron. To protect the gi while ironing, use a thin towel or a pressing cloth between the iron and the gi, so that the gi is ironed nicely without any damage to the embroidery, printing or the patches.
—Steaming. Sometimes, there may be some wrinkles that are stubborn. If you apply more pressure of the iron on the gi, hoping to remove the wrinkles, then the fabric of the gi may get discoloured or burnt. Instead, using a steam iron can help to remove the wrinkles without applying more pressure of the iron on the gi. Steaming with a steam iron can be done directly or with a pressing cloth in between, as per the fabric of the material being ironed.
—Fold lines. The fold lines on the gi should be carefully ironed, so that multiple fold lines do not appear. A single and prominent fold line gives a professional and a sharp look in gradings, demonstrations, and competitions.
—Storage. You may store the ironed gi in a clothing box or hang it in a closet. Storing should be done carefully, so that new wrinkles are prevented from forming. If you take out a stored gi after few weeks or months, then consider re-ironing it just few hours prior to wearing it, so that all new wrinkles that may have formed are removed.
Ironing a gi is optional, but ironing can make your gi look professional that can boost your confidence level, especially in a grading or a competition.
