A dobok is a martial arts uniform worn by practitioners of the Korean martial art known as Taekwondo. The term “dobok” is comprised of two words where “do” means “way”, and “bok” means “clothing”. Therefore, dobok may be considered as “clothing for the way” or the attire worn by practitioners who walk on the way or path of the martial art of Taekwondo. The dobok, also known as a Gi in other martial arts like Karate, Judo, and BJJ, consists of a jacket and a pant, with the belt usually purchased separately. Style influence from keikogi
The dobok has influences from the Japanese keikogi/dÅgi used in Judo, Karate, and other Japanese martial arts. The influence is evident in the jacket which has two front lapels with the left lapel crossing over the right lapel, and kept in place with a belt. Traditional schools of Taekwondo still follow this style of cross-over jacket. In the European cut of the dobok, the sleeves of the jacket and the pants are longer and wider than the traditional keikogi. This cut is generally worn all around the world. Style influence from hanbok
In recent times, the dobok has undergone changes to create a unique style of its own that distinctly sets it apart. The jacket has transformed into a V-neck jacket inspired by the Korean dress known as Hanbok. The jacket may have a black collar to signify a black belt. A V-neck jacket front is usually worn by WTF Taekwondo practitioners, while a vertically closing jacket front is usually worn by ITF Taekwon-Do practitioners.
Style influence from hakama
Practitioners of Keomdo, a Korean sword art, wear a dobok that has wider pants known as “chima baji”, and it is similar to a hakama, worn in Iaijutsu and Kendo.
Besides the above influences, new styles are also being experimented on the dobok, with variations in style and colour of the dobok.
Colour
The traditional colour of a dobok is white. However, black and various other colours are also worn from light pastel shades to deep dark shades. For style, sometimes the jacket and the pants are of different colours, with a black pant usually worn by a black belt. Belts also come in various colours from white to black; however, they vary from school to school. It is recommended to follow the rules of the dojang (martial arts training hall) regarding which colour and style of dobok and belt to wear.
Material
The preferred material is cotton or canvas. Canvas is also cotton but since the weave is different it is slightly heavier. A blend of cotton and polyester is also worn.
